How do your products represent social groups or issues?

My product, a short film about revenge, suicide, and friendships, represents multiple social groups and issues within just five minutes. One of the key social groups depicted is the concept of cliques. Cliques are groups of friends who tend to exclude others, often leading to feelings of isolation for those outside of the group. In my film, these cliques are portrayed in the context of a high school setting, which is a common environment for such groups to form. The film shows how these cliques can perpetuate negative behaviors, such as exclusion, bullying, and manipulation, which ultimately contribute to the central issues of revenge and suicide.

The issues of revenge and suicide are intertwined in the narrative. Revenge, a common theme in many stories, is often driven by feelings of betrayal or hurt. In the case of my short film, the protagonist experiences the consequences of a broken friendship and a betrayal, which leads them to consider revenge. However, the pursuit of revenge quickly spirals into darker emotions, hinting at the protagonist’s mental and emotional turmoil. This journey culminates in a near-suicidal crisis, which portrays the devastating impact that negative emotions, such as anger and sadness, can have on an individual’s well-being.

The portrayal of suicide in the film is an attempt to raise awareness about the mental health struggles that often accompany issues like broken friendships, betrayal, and revenge. This film underscores the importance of addressing emotional issues before they escalate to harmful consequences. The depiction of these issues is meant to resonate with the audience, especially those who have experienced similar struggles, while also promoting empathy and understanding for those dealing with mental health challenges.

In addition to cliques, revenge, and suicide, the film also indirectly touches on the issue of toxic friendships. The protagonist’s journey highlights the destructive nature of friendships that are built on unhealthy dynamics, such as manipulation, jealousy, and emotional exploitation. The film portrays how such friendships can lead individuals down harmful paths, ultimately affecting their mental health and decision-making. This reinforces the need for healthy, supportive relationships and the importance of addressing toxic friendships before they spiral out of control.

How do the elements of your production work together to create a sense of ‘branding’?

The various elements of the production, including visual design, music, narrative structure, and character development, work together to create a cohesive sense of branding. Branding in a short film doesn’t necessarily refer to a traditional marketing concept, but rather to the distinct identity or emotional tone that the film conveys. In my case, the branding revolves around the exploration of dark, emotional themes related to friendship, betrayal, revenge, and mental health.

Visually, the film uses muted colors and dim lighting to create a somber, melancholic atmosphere. The color palette is intentionally desaturated, with shades of gray and blue predominating, to reflect the emotional weight of the narrative. This choice of color contributes to the sense of isolation and sadness that the protagonist feels, and it helps to create a visual identity for the film that aligns with its themes of emotional turmoil and inner conflict.

The music and sound design are also crucial in reinforcing the branding of the film. The soundtrack features slow, haunting melodies that reflect the protagonist’s internal struggle. The music builds tension as the protagonist moves through various stages of the narrative, mirroring the increasing emotional intensity. At key moments, silence is used strategically to heighten the sense of isolation and despair. This interplay between sound and silence contributes to the overall emotional tone of the film and reinforces its brand identity as a poignant, emotionally charged exploration of personal pain and growth.

Narratively, the film follows a clear, structured arc that allows the audience to connect with the protagonist’s journey. The progression from initial conflict (the betrayal and emotional distress) to the climactic moment (the consideration of revenge and suicide) and finally to the resolution (the protagonist’s realization and decision to reach out for help) creates a strong sense of thematic continuity. The clear narrative progression, combined with the emotional intensity, creates a brand identity for the film that is defined by its exploration of the darker aspects of human nature and the complexities of relationships.

In terms of character development, the protagonist undergoes a significant transformation over the course of the film. At the start, they are consumed by negative emotions, feeling betrayed and isolated. However, by the end, they come to understand the importance of seeking support and rejecting toxic behaviors. This character arc, from darkness to light, reflects the film’s overall branding as a story of emotional struggle and eventual redemption. The protagonist’s evolution highlights the core message of the film: that personal pain can be overcome through introspection, self-awareness, and support from others.

All of these elements—visual design, music, narrative structure, and character development—work together to create a unified sense of branding for the film. This branding not only establishes the emotional tone but also communicates the key themes to the audience in a way that resonates with them long after the film ends.

How do your products engage with the audience?

The film engages with the audience on multiple emotional and intellectual levels. One of the primary ways the film engages viewers is through its portrayal of universal, relatable issues. Revenge, suicide, and toxic friendships are themes that many people have encountered in some form, whether directly or through their interactions with others. By addressing these topics in an honest and raw manner, the film allows the audience to connect with the protagonist’s experiences and emotions. This emotional connection fosters empathy and makes the film more impactful.

The film also engages with the audience through its use of tension and suspense. From the moment the protagonist experiences the betrayal, there is a palpable sense of unease that builds throughout the narrative. This tension keeps the audience invested in the story, eager to see how the protagonist will resolve their internal conflict. The film’s pacing and structure, with its moments of silence and sudden emotional outbursts, keep the audience on edge and heighten the emotional intensity.

Furthermore, the film challenges the audience to reflect on their own experiences with friendship, revenge, and mental health. It encourages viewers to consider how they might act in a similar situation and to think critically about the dynamics of their own relationships. By sparking self-reflection, the film engages the audience in a deeper, more meaningful way, prompting them to think about the impact of their actions and decisions on others.

Finally, the film engages with the audience through its open-ended conclusion. Rather than providing a neat, tidy resolution, the film leaves the protagonist’s future uncertain, inviting the audience to interpret the ending in their own way. This ambiguity encourages viewers to reflect on the message of the film and draw their own conclusions about the protagonist’s emotional journey. It creates a sense of engagement that extends beyond the runtime of the film, as the audience continues to think about the issues raised.

How did your research inform your products and the way they use or challenge conventions?

The research I conducted for this short film played a crucial role in shaping both its narrative and visual style. I drew on a range of sources to inform my understanding of the themes of revenge, suicide, and toxic friendships, as well as the ways these issues are commonly portrayed in media. This research helped me avoid common clichés and instead create a more authentic and nuanced depiction of these themes.

In terms of conventions, the film follows a relatively traditional narrative structure, with a clear beginning, middle, and end. However, it challenges certain conventions by subverting audience expectations. For example, the film does not glorify revenge or present it as a satisfying resolution. Instead, it emphasizes the emotional cost of pursuing revenge and the harmful consequences that can arise from such actions. This subversion of convention invites the audience to reconsider the typical portrayals of revenge in media and to reflect on the ethical implications of seeking revenge.

The research also informed the way I approached the portrayal of suicide. Rather than sensationalizing the topic or presenting it as a dramatic plot device, the film treats suicide with the seriousness and sensitivity it deserves. It is not used as a cheap narrative tool but rather as a genuine reflection of the protagonist’s internal struggles. This approach challenges the convention of suicide being used in an exploitative manner in media and instead treats it as a complex and deeply personal issue.

Overall, my research allowed me to create a product that is both informed by and critical of conventional portrayals of revenge, suicide, and toxic friendships. It helped me develop a more authentic and thoughtful approach to these issues, which is reflected in the final product.
